Lyonsdown’s youngest pupils, in the School’s Pre-Reception Nursery class, are now enjoying Spanish as part of their weekly timetable.
Mme Walker, Lyonsdown’s specialist languages teacher, already joins the Pre-Reception Nursery class each week to teach French. This year the School has decided to introduce Spanish, in addition to French, to extend the children’s exposure to languages at this early age – with the goal of broadening their linguistic talents.
The children have already enjoyed learning French for half of their school year and now they are enjoying weekly Spanish lessons – which began after the February half term. The Nursery children are certainly enjoying the fun introduction to this new language – where they learn some of the basics including greetings, colours, numbers, food and animals. All through a variety of fun songs and games.
As well as learning new languages, children in the Pre-Reception Nursery class at Lyonsdown also enjoy weekly Music lessons and two lessons a week of Sport, all taught by specialist teachers. Their busy learning week includes daily phonics and Maths sessions, along with plenty of creative time drawing and playing with playdough to develop those all-important pencil grip skills as a pre-cursor to writing. Of course, there is lots of fun free play time too – both indoors and in the variety of outdoor spaces which include a fairy garden and a nature kitchen!
